Charlie Parker with Strings featuring PJ Perry (sax), Conducted by Tommy Banks

Sat. Feb. 10th, 2018 - Bella Concert Hall (Mount Royal University) – 8pm (VIP event 7pm – Doors 7:30pm)

One of our most ambitious shows of the season bring together two Canadian jazz icons to recreate the iconic ‘Charlie Parker with Strings’ sessions from the early 1950’s. Saxophonist PJ Perry and conductor Tommy Banks will be joined by chamber orchestra and rhythm section for one unforgettable night of classic jazz!

Show Description & Bios

JazzYYC and Mount Royal University are excited to team up to present this once in a lifetime Illumin8 concert experience featuring music from the iconic alto-saxophonist Charlie Parker in the stunning Bella Concert Hall.

Canadian jazz master PJ Perry heads up a special re-creation of his favourite record, Charlie Parker With Strings, originally recorded for the Verve record label between 1949 and 1952 featuring a small classical string ensemble with jazz rhythm section. Although considered somewhat controversial when they were first released, they are now considered landmarks for orchestral jazz productions and rank among the best in Charlie Parker’s discography. This event pairs two lifelong friends and collaborators; P.J. Perry on alto saxophone and Tommy Banks conducting.

Banks has organized a 16-piece band (harp, french horn, oboe, strings and jazz rhythm section) and vintage orchestrations to facilitate the sounds and he will conduct. Perry calls the project a “lifetime dream come true,” and goes on to say “I’m very grateful and honoured to be given an opportunity to play the music that changed my life. It might have seemed an impossibility at earlier stages of my life. Now, I’ve reached a point as a musician and artist that I don’t have to be Charlie Parker. I can be comfortable interpreting the music in my own style, though there isn’t anything a saxophonist can play that doesn’t owe a debt to him.”

In addition to the concert there will be a special VIP Event prior to the show with a meet-and-greet with Tommy Banks.
